Brief biographical notes

Alfonso Niro was a faculty member at Politecnico di Milano for 35 years.
He earned his MSc in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 1982 and later obtained a PhD in Energetics in 1987 with a thesis focused on pool boiling instabilities at low reduced pressure. From 1987 to 1988, he was a research fellow at MIT (USA), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Università degli Studi di Brescia from 1988 to 1990.
In 1990, he joined Politecnico di Milano as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1997, and became a Full Professor in 2001. His research primarily focused on forced convection heat transfer in both single-phase and two-phase flows, as well as heat transfer over enhanced surfaces. His work combined computational and experimental approaches, with a preference for non-intrusive optical techniques. In recent years, he explored the spectral and directional radiometric properties, as well as thermal conductivity of innovative materials.
Professor Niro served as Principal Investigator for several national and international research projects and led numerous industry collaborations on heat transfer challenges across various engineering applications. He authored over 100 scientific papers and held numerous leadership roles at Politecnico and beyond. He was General Secretary of the School of Industrial Engineering (2002–2010), Coordinator of the BSc/MSc Degree Programmes in Energy Engineering (2011–2018), and Director of the Specializing Master in Energy Innovation (from 2023). He also served as President of UIT (2017–2022) and was later named President Emeritus.
